A year at our school
Literacy Success at Windellama Public School
Reading is a clear strategic direction at Windellama Public School. We are explicit, insistent and persistent in delivering high-quality literacy instruction, ensuring every student is supported to grow as a confident and capable reader. This focused approach has resulted in significant improvement in student outcomes, with Year 5 students in 2025 recording a 23.1 point increase in NAPLAN Reading compared to 2024.
This growth reflects the strength of our teaching practice, targeted intervention and unwavering commitment to evidence-based literacy instruction, with student success at the centre of all we do.
GARDEN Club is a valued part of learning at Windellama Public School. Our school is renowned for its authentic, calming and beautifully maintained gardens, which provide rich opportunities for hands-on, real-life learning.
Through GARDEN Club, students actively care for and improve their school grounds, developing responsibility, teamwork and pride in their environment. Seeing students take ownership of their learning and surroundings is a delight for staff and families and reflects our commitment to keeping students at the heart of everything we do.
Our Creative Arts program is tailored to student voice, choice and interests, ensuring learning is engaging, meaningful and creative. This year, students performed “Golden” on djembe drums, a traditional West African style of drum, filling the auditorium with powerful rhythm and energy. The beats, the confidence and the atmosphere were simply amazing.
Oracy & Student Voice
At Windellama Public School, we lean into big moments and real audiences. When Eagle FM broadcast live from our very own verandah, our students rose to the occasion with confidence, pride and professionalism.
Oracy is deliberately taught and deeply valued. From Kindergarten onwards, students are explicitly taught to write, rehearse and deliver speeches, developing strong voices, clear communication and the confidence to be heard. These authentic opportunities ensure our students are articulate, courageous and ready to speak with purpose in school and beyond.
“It’s so good to see a far dinkum school doing fair dinkum things for kids” a visitor of Windellama Public School.
